Interview scorecards are important because they allow you to objectively evaluate candidates during the interview process. This helps ensure that you are selecting the best candidate for the job.

What is an Interview Scorecard?

An interview scorecard is a tool used to evaluate candidates during the interview process. It helps the hiring manager and hiring team gather the crucial attributes a candidate needs to succeed in a role. The goals of the position, the company’s cultural competencies, and  competencies specific to the role are all key elements of the scorecard.

Why are Interview Scorecards Important?

It is all to easy for an interviewer to evaluate a candidate on how much the interviewer likes them. Some people seem very like-able when you first meet them but won't do well at the job. Others may be poor at establishing rapport in a short period of time but could excel at the job. An interview scorecard helps the interviewer go beyond the superficial and focus on job performance. It reminds the interviewer what they are supposed to be evaluating and leads to better hiring decisions.

Add in key goals for the role that, if accomplished, will make you feel you made a successful hire. Make sure you've correctly labeled the type of job it is and the required experience level. Make a list of the cultural competencies needed to thrive in your organization. Identify the competencies needed to succeed in the role. Once you have defined  these factors, you'll want to give your interviewers a way to record scores for each of the factors. You should use a consistent scale so that candidates can be compared.
